What I'm Watching | Crunchy, Crafty, and Highly Caffeinated

What I’m Watching

Long before the invention and accessibility of Netflix and Amazon Prime Streaming I have been a binge tv watcher. I’m not sure if this is a strength or a fault, but it’s me.

When I was in elementary/middle school I remember LOVING breaks from school to watch Little House on the Prairie back to back mid-morning  with a “healthy” dose for Law and Order in the afternoons. I would get wrapped up in the story and excitement knowing that I din’t have to wait a week to find out the thrilling conclusion…it will be on right after the commercial break.

I have a very clear memory from middle school of my mom and I cleaning the house. We happened upon a MTV Road Rules Season 1 Marathon when looking for something to have on as background noise. Our dusting and vacuuming slowed to a crawl. Things would only be accomplished on commercial breaks. Even when our cleaning was done, we sat in front of the TV until Kit, Mark, and the gang received their Handsome Reward.

My mother was my enabler…and (god rest her soul) I love her for it. When I was in college we moved on to HGTV and TLC marathons, especially Trading Spaces. The obsession was real. We had favorite designers and tried to predict who would do what to their spaces. I wish she would have been around for Fixer Upper. She would have tried to make my dad move to Texas just to get Joanna near her house.

My marathoning over the past few years has gotten crazy and usually leads to me getting into a show a year or two before they are cancelled or even 10 years AFTER. It’s sad, but I have come to accept it.

Here are the shows that I have recently binge watched while neglecting the laundry, sweeping, and other household duties like cooking a dinner more substantial than chicken nuggets and fries.

You may or may not know about iZombie and that’s okay. I completely blame The CW for that fact. In only heard about it when two of my favorite characters left Once Upon A Time to star in this. They had not been series regulars, but it was still a slight gut punch to lose them. Then a few months ago my hubs and I sat down to watch it and was amazing! In this zombie saturated world that we live in I could not imagine another take on the idea, but THIS is it. It’s not all “BRAINS!” It has real substance with love, death, morality, and a sweet pup named Minor. I beg you to give this show a try before I go full zombie mode.

Duh, Downton Abbey. I have always had a soft spot for period pieces and this was everything that I could have ever wanted! You get to experience the good, bad, and ugly of a whole different era. With every episode came a twist, a talk about someone’s heir and position, plot babies, and, of course, the latest fashions. I have rewatched the entire series at least 3 times. I mourn that it’s over, but in my mind Marchioness Edith is living a lovely life.

the 100

The 100. I know, I know…another CW show. This is a FAR cry from any of the other light (even when serious) shows on my list. There is something so electrifying about the cast and their characters that makes me count down until Thursdays at 9pm even when “blood must have blood” is stated almost weekly. However, I can admit that this is NOT a show for everyone. Many trigger warnings are to be had.

There is nothing better than Gilmore Girls. There isn’t. I refuse to believe that there is. And now my TV mom and sister are coming BACK. In honor (to Honor’s honor!) of their upcoming return to my television I finished what has to be my third series rewatch. Most of the show keeps getting better, except for Dean…he will always be terrible. With the Star’s Hollow crew back in full force this snarky, sassy, and highly caffeinated is going to fill the hole in my heart that I didn’t know was there. In Omnia Paratus!

west wingThe West Wing is an institution, and yet I had never watched a single episode until 2ish years ago. I couldn’t see how a show about the White House could be entertaining. Now, I have done 2 full watch throughs and religiousy listen to Josh Malina and Hrishikesh Hirway as they recap and discuss the show from the beginning on The West Wing Weekly podcast. The West Wing delivers everything from sweet love stories to bitter breakups, from kidnappings to pleas for asylum, and from babies to funerals. Just don’t mess with Mrs. Landingham’s cookie jar.

I am now in the process of getting to know Ms. Olivia Pope and Associates on Scandal. I chose to start binging this show because I have heard a million different amazing things about it, but then there was the added bonus of Malina, Liza Weil, and Henry Ian Cusick all of whom appear on shows previously listed. When I get actors crossing over on my shows it makes me feel comfortable and in to the show. However, Scandal can hold it’s own when it comes to pulling me in to WANT to watch the entire series.

Here are some other shows that I think qualify for Honorable Mention:

  • The Good Wife
  • Dawson’s Creek
  • Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23
  • Kimmy Schmidt
  • Fuller House
  • Law and Order SVU
  • Doctor Who
  • Call the Midwife
  • Great British Baking Show

What are your favorite shows to binge watch, or do you prefer the wee to week “normal” viewing schedule? Are there any other shows I should add to my binge watch queue?

I love binge watching! (I used to watch Little House all summer!) We don’t have television service any more, so we rely on the streaming sites for our show fix. My favorites have been Sherlock, Downton, Coupling, IT Crowd, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Veronica Mars, Agents of SHIELD, Doctor Who, and Gilmore Girls. One week to week show I would recommend is White Collar. We watched that one pretty faithfully. It’s done now, and I think, on Netflix. Lost, my favorite show of all, I binged seasons 1-3, watched 4 live, saved and binged season 5 so I could watch with a friend who was out of country when it aired, and then finished season 6 live. That one was fun watching week to week for all the speculation and theories. One bummer for not watching week to week is missing out on the community of fans watching together and the podcasts.

SHERLOCK! How could I forget Sherlock!? And, of course LOST. I want to binge it so bad, but I have to keep waiting for We’re so LOST.
