30-something years ago today I graced the world with my presence. You’re welcome. Here is a little look back to the birthdays that have made me who I am, and a peek at my hope for future birthdays.
Memories of Birthdays Past
The Scavenger Hunt
We were never a wealthy family so we didn’t do birthdays at places like Chuck E Cheese. One year my mom created a HUGE scavenger hunt across the back yard for like 20 kids (minus myself). It was madness! There were little toys and brown paper bags everywhere, but it was so much fun. I was mad at the time that I didn’t get to play since I helped create the hunt, but it was perfect. This is what kids birthday parties should be like.
My 18th Birthday
I moved into my college dorm and the following week I turned 18. I hadn’t told anyone since I went to a school where I didn’t really know anyone and most of the students went home. Later that evening one of the few students left on campus that I knew asked if I wanted to go to her friend’s room to drink. Sure (it was my birthday after all).
This may have been a mistake. After more beer than I had ever drank in my life (since I didn’t drink in high school) and a few choice shots of Ice 101 (yuck) my stomach told me I needed to head home. After a long night being thankful that my room was across from the restroom, I awoke with the biggest hangover EVER. At a family picnic later my aunt Lisa warned me about shots…a conversation that should have probably happened before college.
My 21st Birthday
I had dream a grandeur. I thought we were going to start at Buffalo Wild Wings (where I worked at the time) for dinner and then move on to all the bars my fake ID had never been able to get me into.
The plan quickly changed as almost every server/bartender walked up with a double shot of something over the course of our meal. I blame the double Wild Turkey for pushing me over the edge and needing to be sent home with a wing bucket.
My 30th Birthday Weekend
My birthday always falls on or around DragonCon in Atlanta, and up until a few years ago my husband would stay at a hotel with some friends to party it up. For my 30th birthday I joined him for a day, and even hosted a panel, but the night before I threw myself a party.
I invited a bunch of my friends over to eat, drink, and be merry while celebrating my awesome self. It was so much fun because I hadn’t really done anything big for my birthdays over the past few years. We ate some delicious food that our kids would hate, which was rare for us since we had all met through play dates.
Hopes for Birthdays of the Future
Pumpkin Spice Lattes
Back in the day before everything was pumpkin spice flavored/scented, Starbucks released their pumpkin spice latte the week of my birthday and I always considered it a little present to myself. Now they push it until after Labor Day and it makes me mad. They have taken away my birthday happiness PSL.
I am about to head out the door to get ingredients for my birthday dessert because birthdays should have dessert. This year I am making a Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie and I am very excited. I love a dessert challenge 🙂
